Public Notice U-13-160 MEA:
NOTICE OF GAS SALES AND PURCHASE AGREEMENT FILING.
The REGULATORY COMMISSION OF ALASKA (Commission) gives notice that Matanuska
Electric Association, Inc. (MEA) filed a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (Agreement)
with Hilcorp Alaska, LLC (Hilcorp) for Commission approval on August 16, 2013. The
Agreement will provide a firm supply of natural gas that MEA will use to fuel its new
Eklutna Generation Station (EGS), which is currently under construction and intended to
begin full commercial operations on January 1, 2015. MEA currently purchases power
from Chugach Electric Association, Inc. (Chugach). Chugach will cease supplying MEA’s
native load December 31, 2014 and MEA will begin generating its own power from EGS.
The proposed Agreement is MEA’s first gas supply contract to meet MEA’s fuel
requirements for its new 170 Megawatt EGS power plant. MEA requests approval of the
Agreement and permission to recover all fuel and transportation costs in rates
associated with the Agreement. Docket U-13-160 was opened to address this matter.
