Utility Bill Scams Continue.
The RCA’s Consumer Protection and Information Section (CP) warns customers about
scams that continue to make the rounds. Officials at ENSTAR Natural Gas Company,
Municipal Light and Power and other utilities say phone bill scams continue to target
residential and business customers. One customer reported losing $800 to a scammer
recently. The scheme involves someone posing as a utility employee and threatening to
shut off service unless the customer makes a payment.
CP advises utility customers to be vigilant. Anyone getting such a call should just hang
up, contact the utility company at the number on the utility bill (not from the caller ID as
numbers can be spoofed), and report the incident to police.
