RCA INVITES APPLICANTS TO PROVIDE ELECTRIC UTILITY SERVICE IN ADAK
Anchorage, AK - The Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA) released an Order today,
September 23, 2008, finding that good cause exists to revoke the Certificate of Public
Convenience and Necessity (certificate) held by the City of Adak d/b/a Adak Electric Utility (Adak
Electric). The RCA scheduled a public workshop for any individual or entity interested in providing
electric service to Adak.
On January 12, 2007, the RCA opened Docket U-07-5 to investigate the quality of service
provided by Adak Electric. The commission has since held hearings and required filings from
Adak Electric. However, the utility continues to struggle in providing adequate, safe and reliable
utility service; and therefore, the commission found good cause exists to revoke Adak Electric’s
certificate. The RCA is holding the revocation in abeyance until it has assurance that a substitute
electric utility is able to provide service to Adak.
A workshop is scheduled to convene at 9 a.m. on October 20, 2008, in the RCA East Hearing
Room located at 701 West Eighth Avenue, Suite 300, Anchorage, Alaska, for the purpose of
hearing from individuals or representatives of entities interested in applying for a certificate to
provide electric utility service to Adak. The RCA also invited representatives from the Aleut
Corporation and State of Alaska agencies who may meaningfully contribute to the record and
propose solutions for providing long‑term, safe and reliable electric service to Adak.
