Regulatory Commission of Alaska Announces Federal Broadband
Grant Awards.
The Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA) announces recent awards of
federal grant funding for Round 5 of the Rural Alaska Broadband Internet
Access Grant Program (“Grant Program”). The Grant Program provides
funding to assist telecommunications companies and cable operators in
deploying broadband Internet service in rural Alaska. The Grant Program is
funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Rural Development,
and is jointly administered by the Alaska Department of Commerce,
Community and Economic Development (DCCED) and the RCA.
Under continuing state and federal efforts to make Internet service more
affordable to communities in rural Alaska, more than $6.2 million has been
awarded in the fifth round of the Grant Program to offset the costs of
deploying broadband service. Current grant recipients are GCI and Yukon
Telephone Company. Communities that will benefit from this year’s grant
are Ruby, Tanana, and Unalakleet.
